Summary

The National Disability Sports Gala held September 25-30 at Kakyeka Stadium, Mbarara District is a tournament that provides recreational and competitive opportunities for all athletes with physical disabilities.  Athletes from Isingiro, Koboko, Mubende, Kampala, Soroti, Gulu and host Mbarara district traveled to Mbarara to attend this five-day sports camp. Competitions were made in the following games; goal ball, athletics (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and 5000m, 10,000m, Wheel chair racing, long jump, short put, javelin and discus- both ball standing and chair seated throwers), Wheel chair basketball, Para volleyball, Table Tennis, Amputee soccer attracting closed to 400 athletes with disabilities. Athletes who use a wheelchair, braces, walker/crutches or limp categorically classified as physical disabilities participated in the wheelchair Basketball. With no Basketball court at Kakyeka, Wheelchair Basketball matches were hosted at Ntara School Basketball court located about 1 mile(s) from the major venue.

 

Wheelchair Basketball had six teams participating and nine matches played overall. Teams were categorized into group A comprising of holders Gulu Wheelchair Basketball, Layibi and Mbarara; while group B had KCCA, Nakawa and Mubende Rehabilitation Center.  Top of each group met runners up in the corresponding group in the semi finals before the final showdown on day three of the fixture September 29, 2018.

 

Gulu wheelchair basketball Club led group A with two wins garnering 4 points to meet Nakawa in the first Semi Finals. Layibi was runner up and matched up KCCA in the second Semi Finals. Gulu sees off Nakawa to book a finals place. Kampala battled its way into the finals against a resilient Layibi side. There was not enough time to play third place. Layibi declared 3rd place by virtue of being a better losing semifinalist. Nakawa settles for fourth place. KCCA deny Gulu Wheelchair Basketball chance of taking the championship for the third time in a row. In total there were 9 matches played and 253 baskets scored during the tournament from 27 different players.

 

12 out of 22 Gulu Wheelchair basketball roster were players U19 athletes currently participating in the Blazesports funded project. Trophies were awarded to first, second third teams in the categories of Primary school, secondary school, University and Community Teams. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were awarded to winners in different sports discipline.

30 athletes (14 Gulu Primary school and 16 Gulu High school) with visual Impairment in the categories of B1, B2 and B3 participated in Goal, showdown and Track and field events.

 

Cumulatively, Gulu Primary finished first runner in the primary school category championship.

Cumulatively, Gulu High School finished first runner in the secondary school category championship.

Alex Lagu was the sole representative of Gulu University where he accumulated 64 points. Alex ran in the 100m, 200m and 400m each time winning convincingly in the race.

 

Uganda Paralympic Committee president Mr. Mpindi Mbumali handed over the second runner up trophy to Gulu District team during the closing ceremony. Team Gulu returned Sunday morning parading their Trophies and winners medals in the streets of Gulu Town ending their procession at Gulu Disabled Persons’ Union.
