Host Gulu extended invitation to their counterparts Lira Wheelchair Basketball team to join them commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disability 2015, in Gulu District. This event was meant to celebrate disability sports in Uganda as showcase our skills and pride to the community.
2015 MTN Wheelchair Race 10 km Marathon 1st runner up and 2nd runner who also double as wheelchair basketball players were presented with their awards during the closing ceremony.
Financial support from Uganda Communications Commission was used to repair and service the sports wheelchairs, purchase first aid supplies, T-shirts, transport fare for visiting team, provision of meals and refreshment for all participants as proposed. APPRECIATION from the 30 athletes with disabilities who participated. looking forward to the 2016 !!
Friday December 9, 2016, a 10,000m and 5,000m Gulu marathon run under the theme: “Reject and Report Corruption-Your Responsibility for Improved Service Delivery” was sponsored by ActionAid. The run attracted school children, youths and 15 men and women with disabilities. Persons with physical disability on wheelchairs braved the 5,000m circuit on the streets of Gulu town starting at the Gulu District Local Government offices and finished at Gulu Taks Center.
Ojok Maxwell topped the race riding a tricycle, followed by Ojara Denis (wheelchair) and Ocira Richard (wheelchair) on the male categories.
Acen Florence won the female race on a tricycle, followed by Acayo Pauline on wheelchair and Alanyo Florence (tricycle) finished third. Top three finalist were presented with a certificate and price award of UShs 200,000/=, 100,000/= and 50,000/= respectively.
Northern Uganda Hip Hop Culture in association with Gulu Wheelchair Basketball Club decided to collaborate their outreach to communities of Northern Uganda expounding opportunities of Creative Arts culture with persons living disabilities to witness.
In an event dubbed ‘Easterfest Extravaganza’, Gulu Wheelchair Basketball Club Senior team contested a wheelchair Basketball match against their junior side at Kaunda ground court. Spectators were treated to Hip Hop music performance by Battalions of the Kitgum based Hip Hop Culture in the intervals.
Gulu based Hip Hop artist Nyeko Gabriel aka ‘Black’ and Red Hip Hop did hit the audience with their popular ‘wan lungec ’ song before the MC Benny showcasing his ingenuity as founder and promoter of talents in the post war Northern Uganda.
Renowned guitarist visually impaired artist Opiyo Tonny aka ‘kangwereke’ excited the crowd with popular rhymes about suggesting dressing of certain women today and those preferring to bleach to look brown in search for beauty. Our thankfulness to Mr Mwaka Benson and Northern Uganda Hip Hop Culture for sponsoring the event and sharing their love through creative arts performance with our community of persons with disabilities in an inspiring way.
